Karnal is a city located in the NCR (National Capital Region) and the headquarters of Karnal District in the Indian state of Haryana. It is one of the Counter-Magnet cities.
Karnal was also known as Karnaal, Kurnaul or Karnaul during the British Raj. Karnal is one of the Counter Magnet Areas. Karnal is said to have been founded by Karna, a key figure in the epic Mahabharata, who died at the hands of his brother and archrival, Arjuna. It is said that Kaurav prince Duryodhan gave "Ang Raaj" as a gift to Karna so he become eligible to fight the Pandav Prince. This "Ang Raaj" was later developed by Karna which is Karnal today.
Karnal has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
The city of Karnal, said to have been founded by Raja Karna, of the Mahabharta fame, spring into prominence in 1739 when Nadir Shah defeated Muhammad Shah at Karnal. Raja Gopal Singh of Jind seized Karnal in 1863, and the Marhattas established themselves at Karnal in 1785. Skirmishes however, followed between the Marhattas and the Sikhs. In 1795 the Marhattas finally wrested it from Raja Bhag Singh of Jind and made it over to the George Thomas, who took part in the fight. Meanwhile Raja Gurdit Singh of Ladwa obtained possession of Karnal. It was captured by the British in 1805 and made over to Muhamdi Khan (Mandal). Karnal, on being formed into a British cantonment, the fort which had been built by Raja Gajpat singh of Jind, was taken over by the British and converted into a residence for Dost Mohd. Khan Amir of Kabul. The fort was used as a jail, as quarters for native cavalry and as poor house. In 1862, it was made over to the Education Department, when the district school was moved into it from the city.
Karnal is important city on Delhi Ambala Rail Line & Sher Shah Suri Marg (G.T.Road), connected with all important places in the country. It is 123 Kilometer from Delhi & 130 Kilometer from Chandigarh. Karnal District lies on the western Bank of river Yamuna which once flows about 11 Kilometer. to the east forming eastern boundary of the district. The river Yamuna separates Haryana from Utter Pardesh. The Karnal Distt. including Panipat lies between 29'09'50" and 29'50' North latitude and 76 31' 15" and 77 12'45" East longitude, its height from sea level is between 235 and 252 meters. The Karnal Distt. is surrounded by Kurukshetra District on its north-west, jind & Kaithal Distt. on its west, Panipat Distt. on its south and Utter Pradesh on east.
Geographical / Physical Aspects
Yamuna River forms eastern boundary of the district and flows from north to south. The district is a part of the Ganga-Sindus (Indo-Gangestic) plains and has a well spread network of western Yamuna canal. Its geographical area has been divided in to three agroclimatic regions, Khadar, Bhangar and Nardak belt. Khadar starts from Indri-Karnal road one mile away from Karnal covering the area in between Yamuna river and National Highway Road No.1 upto Patti-Kalyana village. Bhangar area starts from west of Khadar area covering Gharaunda, development block. The nardak area lies in Nissing, Nilokheri and Assandh development block. However, its water is saline and not fit for irrigation.
Activities and Achievements
District Statistical Office, coordinates the statistical activities of different offices, to prevent duplication and to serve as a stone house for statistical information. Statistical data collected by District Statistical Office are published in their publications. The functions and activities of District Statistical Office, Karnal are stated below: -
· Collect, Compile and analysis various types of statistical data relating to various Socio-Economic aspects.
· Serves as a stone house for all types of statistical data needed for planning and formulation of development programme.
· Conducts surveys relating to various Socio-Economic problems of the district and undertakes evaluation studies on selected projects.
District Statistical Abstract
This is an important publication containing useful information for taking policy decisions, formulation of development plans and undertaking research work. Annual series up to 2009-10 are available. Next series will be due in June 2012.
District Socio-Economic Review is another yearly publication. DSER for year 2009-10 has already been sent to Head Office in 2011.
Farm Account & Family Budget Survey
This office studies 'Economics of forming' and Family Budgets of selected cultivators'. For this purpose, 12 farm account and 6 of family Budget registers have been installed. The inspection of all the holdings is being done regularly.
To prepare the Estimates of state income and per capita income, this office collects information from 48 offices & sends to Head Office. The information for the year 2009-10 has already been sent to H.Q.
Capital Formation Estimates
For this purpose, this office collects information from 60 offices and sends to Head office for studying increase or decrease in capital formation.
Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme(PMEGP): -
The Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India has announced the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) w.e.f. 15-8-2008 with Khadi & Village Commission being the Nodal Agency for implementation of scheme. The scheme is being implemented through KVIC & KVIBs of the State & Union Territories in the Rural Areas and through District Industries Centre, in both Rural & Urban Areas with the objectives to develop entrepreneurship & self-employment opportunities across the country. Any individual above the age of 18 years and who passes at least 8th Standard pass qualification certificate may apply for obtaining financial assistance above 10 lacs (Maximum 25 lacs) for manufacturing sector and above 5 lacs (Maximum 10 lacs) for servicing sector. Margin Money (Subsidy) is available @ 15% of the Project cost for those who set up their venture in Urban Areas & @ 25% who set up their venture in Rural Areas Additional Margin Money @ 10% is available for special categories viz SC, BC minorities, women, Ex-Servicemen, Physically handicapped.

There are 2511 small scale industries in the district as on 31.3.2012 providing employment to about 19858 persons and producing various types of goods such as agricultural implements, Electronic Motors, Submersible Pumps, Welding Electrodes, Card Board/Mill Board, Paints, Edible and non-Edible Oils, Leather and Non-Leather Footwear, Rubber Hawaii Chapels, Pressure Cookers, Kitchen Cuttlery, Finished Leather, Life Saving Medicines, Wheat Products, Wooden & Steel Furniture, Rice, Milk Products, Wire Netting, Washing Soap etc.
Karnal is also famous for its leather shoes and Liberty Group is pioneer in this industry at Karnal. Shoes and shoe uppers manufactured by Liberty Group are being exported to various countries such as Hungry, U.K., Dubai, Singapore, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Greece to the tune of about 50 crores. The annual production of Liberty Group is 500 crores.
